In an effort to obey God’s command to “distribute freely” and “give to the poor,” (2 Corinthians 9:9) the PCA has set apart the office of deacon to lead the church in this important work.
Meeting Physical & Spiritual Needs. This office is one of service to both the physical and spiritual needs of people. Deacons are appointed to minister to those who are in need, to the sick, to the friendless, and to any who may be in distress. It is their responsibility also to organize and encourage church members in giving their time, talents, and financial resources toward helping others.
To those inside & outside our church. While the primary focus of our deacons is to the needs of members within our church, they also serve people outside of our congregation, and help to support local mercy ministry organizations. The deacons also have the authority to appoint and oversee godly men and women who assist them in caring for the sick, for widows, orphans, prisoners, and others who may be in distress or need.
As it is written:
“He has scattered abroad his gifts to the poor; his righteousness endures forever.”.
