Mercy-Ministry

The Bible is full of references to caring for the poor and the weak, and coming to the aid of the defenseless. God takes special interest in and places a special hedge of protection around the widow, the orphan, and the stranger. James tells us that “Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction” (James 1:27). Jesus tells us that when we feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and visit the prisoner, we do it for him (Matthew 25:40).

At Lansdale Presbyterian we take God’s call to mercy ministry seriously. As important as the ministry of the word of God is, a word ministry that is not accompanied by a ministry of deeds is empty (James 2:15,16; 1 John 3:18). Aside from the general caring that takes place within our congregation we have organized ministries of mercy.

The Ministry of Mercy Committee of our deacons oversees the ministry of the needy in our church. This ministry includes:

- Providing funds, food, and coordinating assistance for those in need throughout the year

- Monthly Food From the Heart dinners for the needy in our community

- Harvest Home ministry which provides food baskets and monetary gifts to those in need at

Thanksgiving time

- College scholarship assistance for students attending Christian colleges

- Angel Tree Christmas gift giving which provides gifts to children of needy families in our community

Our women’s ministry helps those in need through a variety of services:

- Hospitality & Helping Hands Committee coordinates meals and visits for individuals and families

going through difficult times.

- Hugs for the Home Bound seeks to creatively express love and appreciation to those of our

congregation who can no longer leave their homes to attend worship and other church activities.

- Visits of Mercy is a way in which our women assist the deacons in ministering to the needy.
